How to Change Endnotes to Numbers in Word 365 (Mac)

Posted on May 8, 2025May 8, 2025 by Eleyna

Okay. I really almost lost my mind over this. 😵‍💫 I was editing a document in Word 365 on my Mac, and all my endnotes were showing those lowercase roman numerals (i, ii, iii…). For the life of me, I could not figure out how to change them to normal numbers.

I googled. I clicked through every tab. Nothing made sense. I even considered giving up and just pretending roman numerals are fine.

Then… I figured it out. And it was SO EASY I wanted to scream. 😂 So I’m putting it here in case someone else needs it (or future me forgets again).

How to Change Endnotes to Numbers in Word 365 on a Mac

Here’s the exact step-by-step process I followed:

Step 1: Put your cursor inside any endnote.

It doesn’t matter which one. Just click anywhere in the endnote text at the bottom of the document.

cursor on the endnote

Step 2: Go to the top menu bar and click “Insert.

Not “References,” not “Tools”—just “Insert.”

Step 3: Choose “Footnote…” from the dropdown.

This brings up a pop-up window where you can adjust both footnotes and endnotes.

Step 4: In the pop-up, find the section labeled “Endnote.”

Look for the option that says “Number format.”

go to number format

Step 5: Change “Number format” to 1, 2, 3.

This is the one you’re probably looking for. Bye-bye, roman numerals.

Step 6: Click “Apply.”

Boom. That’s it. All your endnotes will now use regular numbers instead of i, ii, iii.

Seriously. That’s all it took. I wish I had known this two hours earlier.

Hope this saves someone else the headache!
